Brazilian band Oruã announced on Wednesday that their new album Slacker is due out October 24th via K.
"The announcement is accompanied by the release of scuzzy, melodically off-kilter lead single 'Deus-Dará,'" a statement reads. "The track is a song about hope, having faith, and believing. Coming from an extremely humble area in Rio de Janeiro, Baixada Fluminense, Oruã became a voice of resistance and prosperity. The recording features Gabriela Motta on backing vocals, a resident of São Paulo and member of Monstro Bom. Oruã have also annnounced a headlining European tour, including dates in Paris on July 23rd (Supersonic) and London on July 24th (Sebright Arms)–they're also set to play North American dates later this year, including a date at LA's Zebulon (11/16), more dates/details coming soon."
"Featuring former members of Built To Spill, the quartet creates an exciting, unique style of guitar music–they combine elements of '90s lo-fi indie rock, krautrock, noise, afrobeat, and Brazilian music, ranging from Luiz Gonzaga’s primal Pernambuco sound to classic Brazilian psych rock," they say. "Slacker follows their 2024 LP PASSE, which earned acclaim from SPIN, Bandcamp Daily, and more. The new record has some special guests, including Gabriela Motta (Monstro Bom), Caxtrinho, Grisa, Melanie Radford (Blood Lemon/Built to Spill), Dinho Almeida (Boogarins), Amarcel (Kartas), and Alexander Zhemchuzhnikov. The album also features a performance from their current drummer Ana Zumpano, who made the guest appearance prior to joining the band."
"Oruã, composed of Lê Almeida (guitar/vocals), João Casaes (synths), Bigu Medine (bass), and Zumpano (drums) was formed during one of the most turbulent periods in recent Brazilian history–a period that saw a coup d’état, political imprisonment, and the rise of the extreme right. The band was idealized by Almeida, a cultural agitator in Rio de Janeiro’s independent scene, most known through his label Transfusão Noise Records. The band came together during improvisonal jam sessions they had at Escritório, an underground creative and community space they all frequented in Brazil."
"In 2019 their sound was discovered by indie rock legend Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, which led to him inviting Lê and João to become temporary members of the 90’s indie rock band. Later they recorded, co-produced, and co-mixed Built to Spill’s most recent album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name, released in 2022 on Sub Pop Records.
After touring extensively with Built to Spill and showcasing their high-energy shows in the US and Europe throughout the years, Oruã returned to the US in 2024 to tour in support of their album PASSE. At the end of the tour, Oruã went to Seattle and recorded Slacker with Jim Roth, who also plays guitar, synth and percussion on the recordings."
