It took an orchestra for duo Jonathan Rado and Sam France to capture their first properly recorded output, a lush, Dali-esque fever dream, equal parts vivacious and disconcerting. Sometimes humorous, occasionally butt wiggling, always confounding, Hang blurts eight nostalgia-drenched curios of varying approachability. David Bowie constitutes their primary vocal influence, especially on “Mrs. Adams.” Further inspiration derives from soul, Broadway and even country, but Foxygen turns those genres inside out and upside down. Points must be awarded for originality, even if only half the album truly tickles the eardrum.
