ABOUT THE T.J. MARTELL FOUNDATION

The T.J. Martell Foundation was born in the music industry, created from heartbreak that turned to hope. T.J. Martell, the son of record industry executive Tony Martell, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 17. Knowing he was not going to make it, he asked his dad to raise one million dollars for research that would give others in the future a better chance. T.J. passed away two years later but Tony heard him clearly and set out to keep his vow... and he did! The T.J. Martell Foundation, in the 37 years since T.J.’s passing, has raised over $250 million. The money we raise is granted to eleven leading medical centers nationally as “angel funding” to support the initial, innovative research into the cause, treatment and cure for cancer, leukemia and AIDS.

Virtually all the money raised on the West Coast is granted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for its groundbreaking pediatric cancer research. Through a grant from the T.J. Martell Foundation, CHLA developed a treatment for neuroblastoma, a deadly form of pediatric cancer. This treatment has increased the survival rate from 20% to 80%. When their initial research shows signs of promise, CHLA is able to secure additional funding from government sources and this has multiplied our $27 million in grants by 25x to a total value of $675 million! But we’re still not there... CHLA and T.J. Martell are committed to bringing the mortality rate down to 0% and only money will buy the research needed to defeat these diseases.
