Bonnie Raitt joins in at Benefit for artist Sarah Brown

It was “A Very Special Blue Monday” at Antone’s on October 16th, in support of Sarah Brown and her journey toward a life-saving liver transplant from a living donor. Sarah was celebrated on stage by friends and musical comrades Jimmie Vaughan, Larry Fulcher, Johnny Nicholas & The Hidden Charms, Rosie Flores, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Eve Monsees, Derek O’Brien, Fran Christina, Nick Connolly, Jason Corbiere, Rodney Craig, Texas Horns  and special surprise guest, Bonnie Raitt.

Raitt has known Sarah for almost 50 years and was happy to lend her support to get the word out about living donors and the unique way we can all make a difference in the life of a person who needs a liver transplant.

Over the years, Sarah’s powerful yet supple bass playing has helped form the backbone of shows and recordings by some of the greatest blues and R&B luminaries in the industry. Both before and after her arrival in Austin in 1982, she shared the stage and studio with the likes of Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Otis Rush, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Earl King, James Cotton, Dr. John, Junior Walker and many, many more. If a blues legend set foot onstage at Antone’s, chances are Sarah was standing right alongside him or her.  She was an indispensable friend and colleague to the other “Antone’s Blues Women,” including Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, Lou Ann Barton, and Eve Monsees. She has also worked extensively with Americana stalwarts such as Dave Alvin, Rosie Flores, and Bill Kirchen.
A bass player of national renown, Sarah has been a staple of the fabled Antone’s House Band for forty years. Now, having been diagnosed with PSC, a progressive, non-alcohol-related disease which destroys the liver, musical friends and special guests gathered at Antone’s on Monday night to show their love and support for Sarah and to raise awareness of the lifesaving gift of a Living Liver Donor, for Sarah and thousands of others. Although insurance covers all the medical expenses of her donor, the money raised from the evening will go toward Sarah’s pre- and post-transplant expenses such as lodging and transportation both for the donor and herself. Additionally, 20% of the proceeds will benefit the University Health Transplant Institute.
