Tone2’s Icarus 3.1 Update Brings MPE Enhancements, Custom Skins, and Performance Fixes

Tone2 Audio, recognized for its innovative and powerful virtual instruments, has released version 3.1 of its flagship synthesizer workstation, Icarus. This update is available for free to all existing Icarus 3 users and includes a range of new features, interface improvements, and important bug fixes, enhancing an already versatile synth.

Tone2 has a strong reputation for creating high-quality synths that appeal to both sound designers and musicians. Icarus is known for its advanced 3D wavetable synthesis and extensive sound-shaping capabilities.

One of the key additions in version 3.1 is expanded MPE support. A statement from the company reveals, “MPE support for Legato and Mono modes,” allowing for more expressive control when used with compatible MIDI controllers. Additionally, the update adds support for custom skins. As Tone2 notes, “Added support for custom skins,” enabling users to personalize the look of the synth’s interface.

The wavetable editor now also remembers the last file location for the “Load Sample” and “Load Waveform” functions, streamlining the workflow. According to the release, “‘Load Sample’ and ‘Load Waveform’ now remember the last file location,” which helps save time during sound design sessions.

There are also several interface and usability enhancements. The pitch wheel behavior has been refined, with the company stating that the “Pitchwheel snaps less aggressively to 50%,” resulting in smoother pitch modulation. The default skin has been updated to better highlight the synth’s structure, making navigation easier. Tone2 explains, “The new default skin makes it easier to see the structure of the synth,” though users can switch back to the previous skin in the setup menu if preferred.

The update addresses technical issues as well, including a workaround for a Windows 11 bug affecting the vertical layout of the SegoeUI font. Tone2 confirms, “Workaround for a bug of Windows 11 that messed up the vertical layout of the SegoeUI font.” Mac users benefit from a fix targeting a rare compatibility issue with trackpads: “Fix for a very rare compatibility problem with trackpads on the Mac.”

Importantly, Icarus 3.1 maintains full backward compatibility. The company assures that “Icarus 3.1 is downward compatible with all previous versions,” so all existing projects and patches will load without any additional steps.
