The Alliance for Women Film Composers recently launched a new series, Amplified, to lift up underrepresented composers and songwriters and give them a seat at the table. The first installment in their new series took place in June, which featured an intimate live roundtable conversation featuring women and gender diverse composers and songwriters working across film, television, and media music. Alliance Co-Presidents Ronit Kirchman and Taura Stinson discussed the inspiration behind the new series. Music Connection: What inspired the idea behind Amplified?
Taura Stinson: We wanted something that would bring people to our table, because it can feel like we’re always begging for a table, as women composers. This is for women and gender diverse composers to be amplified, gain visibility, and get their music heard.
MC: What did this inaugural event tell you about what’s happening in film and TV scoring right now?
TS: These composers are here and a part of the ecosystem. You often see the same men hired over and over again. If we come together, our voices are stronger and louder.
MC: What’s one insight or story from the roundtable that surprised or stuck with you?
Ronit Kirchman: The collective feedback we got from both the panelists and audience was how open and detailed the conversation was.
TS: I’m proud that we were able to pull off an all-woman event. Our venue, all our sponsors, everything was founded or run by women, and we hope to continue that.
MC: For women and gender diverse composers early in their careers, what advice do you have?
RK: The power of your original voice as an artist is your greatest asset. Put your faith in your artistry and the community, and the sky is the limit.
TS: As women storytellers, we have to stand together against erasure.
