Hit the Decks! It's BEC

U.K. electronic artist BEC has had a deep connection with music since she was a teenager.

"I was constantly collecting tracks, and by the time I moved to London at 17 or 18, I already had thousands as a music collection," she says. "I studied Graphic Information Design at university and later worked in the advertising world as a digital designer in London. But I always felt like my creative output was serving someone else’s vision. I wasn’t fully in control of my own artistic voice. That’s when I started seriously considering music as my true form of expression. I began studying electronic music production at SAE in the evenings. A friend knew about my extensive music collection and encouraged me to pursue my dream. So then I started to play any gigs I could get, from after party venues to restaurants. And one day while walking home from the office through the chaos of central London, I made a snap decision - I was going to move to Berlin and pursue music full-time."

"So, I packed my bags, moved over, and never looked back," she continues. "That was almost 10 years ago to the day this May. Things got serious the moment I arrived in Berlin. The city gave me the space and energy to fully immerse myself in music. I dove into Ableton, explored hardware, and began shaping the sound that now defines me."

BEC says that her sound has evolved and become more diverse over time.

"It’s shifted into something slightly more experimental," she says. "I’m now fusing genres together, blending elements of dub, drum & bass, raw techno, and psytrance. That hybrid approach allows me to push boundaries while still maintaining a strong, driving energy. I love combining hypnotic rhythms with industrial textures, melodic tension, and sometimes spiritual or psychedelic elements. It’s techno with depth, designed to move bodies but also shift energy. I’m drawn to the darker edges of sound but always bring some kind of release or transcendence."

The artist has just released "Tibetan Monks" on BPitch, which she'sunderstandably proud of.

"It did really well and it was my first time on the label. It felt like a big milestone in my journey," she says. "Coming up next is probably my most anticipated and biggest release of 2025: a full EP on Artcore, which I’m really excited about. It’s my debut EP on the label and also my first collaboration with the incredibly talented live artist Giorgia Angiuli. I’ve always admired the creative vision at Artcore—Indira's direction for the label is so unique, and I’m genuinely happy to be part of that world. The EP includes two solo tracks, 'Cherry Dagger' and 'Loca mania,' and a collab track with Giorgia called 'Seeker.' 'Cherry Dagger' explores the idea of embracing the dark feminine—there’s this femme fatale energy in the track that really leans into shadow work and empowerment. It’s intense and moody with an evolving synth line that drives the track. The whole visual concept for this EP is tied to the color red, which for me symbolises passion, danger, and power."

"'Loca mania' is a high-energy, chaotic banger—kind of a response to my earlier track 'Loca,' which came out on an Artcore compilation," she continues. "This one dives into breakbeats and has strong drum & bass and dubstep influences, which reflect my roots growing up in London and Brighton. You can definitely hear shades of The Prodigy, Faithless, and the early sounds that shaped me before I fully entered the techno world. The collaboration with Giorgia is something I’m especially excited about. Funnily enough, we both posted the same Rumi quote—'What you seek is seeking you'—on Instagram, and that’s what sparked the whole idea for the track. We got in touch and decided to build a piece around that concept. Giorgia recorded some stunning vocals and layered in live instruments like cello and violin, and I built a hard techno foundation underneath it all. There’s a powerful break in the track where you hear my acapella responding to her vocals—kind of offering a darker perspective on the original quote. It plays with the duality of the idea: that what we seek isn’t always light—it can also be shadow. It’s a yin and yang concept; when we seek positivity, we can find it, but if we’re drawn to darkness, we often attract that too. The track really explores that emotional tension and contrast."

As for gear: "Key pieces of gear – well, I’m loving the new Ableton 12 upgrade. The built-in factory effects are incredible, especially RAW and the new saturation options, which I’ve been using a lot lately. I also use the Push 3 Standalone regularly—it’s amazing for getting into flow when I’m off-grid, out in nature, away from Wi-Fi, just focusing on sketching out new ideas. For drums, I often turn to the Roland TR-8S. I love building out patterns on it and recording them directly into Ableton. Synth-wise, I’m really into the Gaia 2 right now—it’s got these warm, rich analog sounds that are super versatile. And of course, Serum 2 has been a game changer for me; I waited so long for the update and it absolutely delivered."

"In terms of DJing, I usually play across three decks—sometimes four if they’re available. I create short loops and remix live as I go. It keeps the energy dynamic and lets me shape the set in real time. I love using the Pioneer V10 mixer too—it’s just so solid and intuitive."

Looking ahead, BEC has plenty planned for 2025.

"I have more releases coming through my label Embargo Records, plus I’m working on a special audiovisual set," she says. "There’s also a tour brewing across Europe and Latin America, and I’ve got a new Soundcamp project launching in Mexico for aspiring artists. It’s a busy year, but it feels aligned - and I’m excited to keep evolving."
