Enter - if you DARE - submissions for the Tricks for Treats Composition Competition!
Here are the details (aka “tricks”) for submission:
You only have 31 hours to create and submit your piece!
Winners will be announced October 31st, 2020 (Halloween).
There are two categories to enter. You can only submit to one:
1. Acoustic (No Technology): Compositions are created without using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) MIDI and/or VST plugins to enhance the work. A video submission is required of the piece being performed. Get creative! Utilize extended techniques, prepared piano, etc. You are not limited on the amount of acoustic instruments that you can use (No electronic instruments). Need some inspiration? Listen to Henry Cowell’s The Banshee or some George Crumb.
2. Technology: Composers can utilize a DAW, VST plugins, and/or MIDI devices to create their work. Sample rate must be set to 48kHz. A link to the audio file must be submitted. Please only submit soundcloud, youtube, or vimeo links.
Your piece should strive to elicit the following: suspense, dark, anxiety, terror
Compositions must be between 1-2 minutes in length max.
A motif (melodic theme) must be present in your work. It can range anywhere from 4 notes to 4 measures. Need some inspiration? Listen to these themes: Goblin’s “Suspiria Theme” from Suspiria, Ennio Moriconne’s “The Thing (Main Theme)” from The Thing, John Carpenter’s “Halloween (Main Theme)” from Halloween
