In the DIY world information is power, especially when it comes to business activities. With that in mind, industry veterans Kenny Kerner and Chris Fletcher created thecoolschool to address the needs of DIY artists. Together, they have over 75 years of experience in booking, touring, artist management, music journalism, artist development and career counseling.
This unique school focuses on the “business of music” with seminars, workshops, lectures, counseling and industry events specifically tailored for independent artists and bands.
Subject matter includes personal management, booking and touring, time management, networking, artist development, utilizing social networks and designing marketing plans, as well as other subjects.
thecoolschool also offers career counseling, help with bios and EPKs, and will work with student-clients on their live shows.
Enrollment is easy—it’s on an event-by-event basis. “Musicians don’t have to go to school for years and spend thousands of dollars to learn about the music business,” Kerner notes. “At thecoolschool they can enroll only for the lectures and workshops that directly impact their careers.”
Fletcher adds, “Because musicians have little or no money, we’ve priced everything very low—mostly ranging from $20 to $50 with special discounts for entire bands.”
thecoolschool is held on Saturdays at the Actors Workout Studios in the Art District of North Hollywood with events scheduled through February and March. Additional dates are currently being scheduled.
The first coolschool lecture, “How To Make Money As A Musician” (with Chris Fletcher), was held on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
