A simple stage, lavender light, but ah that disco/dance music is what Nile Rodgers and Chic is known for and brought last night as the opener for Cher’s “Here We Go Again Tour” at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN. Chic had the crowd on their feet dancing to longtime favorite hits that Rodgers wrote for Chic and others such as Diana Ross “I’m Coming 0ut” and David Bowie “Let’s Dance.” Chic played their famous disco song “La Freak” and the one that started it all at Studio 54, “Good Times.”
Cher brought Vegas to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena last night. Cher being Cher, made a dramatic entrance, coming down from the ceiling to a stage that was bathed in exotic colors, props, and costumes. A setting fit for a queen. Cher encased in bright orange hair, an elaborate headpiece and costume, sang “Woman’s World.”
During a 15-minute monologue, Cher shared stories about Sonny, her long career, supporters and people who weren’t so supportive. Her strength, vulnerability, grit and savvy came through as she spoke about projects such as Moonstruck, Witches of Eastwick and a visit to The David Letterman Show. Cher has a good sense of humor about it all.
Cher’s setlist (16 songs) included many favorites, newer songs and covers. Cher didn’t disappoint with several sets and costume changes, going from an Indian theme with beautiful lighting and intricate designs to a 50’s style diner where she sang, “The Shoop Shoop Song” on to a Memphis setting for the song “Walking in Memphis.” During costume changes and some of her performances, vintage video montages and photography from her movies, shows and private life shown. One of the most memorable moments of the night is when through technology, Cher sang aside a video of Sonny for the songs “The Beat Goes On” and “I’ve Got You Babe.”
During the show, Cher fans got an unbelievable display of singing and dancing by this self-proclaimed 72-year-old artist. She even asked the audience, “What’s your granny doing tonight?” Cher does not look like a granny. The jaw-dropping moment came when she emerged on stage with the outfit that she wore in her music video for “Turn Back Time.” The crowd went wild. Cher belted out the much -loved song and danced back-and-forth across the stage, at one point shedding her jacket.
Cher has many more shows in her tour. If you have ever thought about seeing Cher or are a real fan, I encourage you to go see this show. You won’t be disappointed. It’s over the top. It’s colorful. It's a feast for the eyes. She is the undeniable voice you would know in the dark. All in all, it is Cher.
