Eventide Music Mouse: Your Computer Mouse as a Musical Controller

With a cute and quirky name, it’s easy to ask, what is Music Mouse? We have the answer. Music Mouse is an intelligent, algorithmic musical composition software developed by electronic music pioneer Laurie Spiegel. Originally released in 1986, it turns simple mouse movements into harmonically structured music in real time, functioning as a responsive musical instrument rather than a traditional sequencer or plugin. Spiegel was frustrated by the lack of available tools when personal computers emerged. Her self-released Music Mouse program transformed the Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari computers into accessible improvisational instruments by mapping advanced music theory logic directly onto cursor coordinates. Discontinued in 2021, Eventide Audio’s involvement began in 2026. To celebrate the software’s 40th anniversary, Eventide partnered directly with Spiegel to officially rebuild, modernize, and re-release the classic instrument for modern macOS and Windows operating systems. Note that Music Mouse is a standalone app and not a plugin.

What happens when you launch Music Mouse? You can immediately start musically improvising. Music Mouse launches with a large graphic XY grid, and a comprehensive set of controls on the left side. Simply moving your mouse left or right, up or down creates polyphonic sounds that change pitches, melodic lines, and chord voicings, and it’s easy, fun and inspiring right away.  Music Mouse has four individually mutable active voices represented by four colored lines on screen. Two lines track your direct mouse location, and two lines represent automated algorithmic harmony. Pressing the space bar instantly toggles the live sound on or off. When the translucent cursor lines become solid, the instrument is live. When stopped, you can click and hold the mouse button while dragging to move the cursor silently across the grid without triggering new notes. Use this technique to create intervallic leaps. Pressing the Delete key can also disconnect or silence unwanted sound generation when maneuvering the interface.

You can think of Music Mouse as an idea generator, where you may come up with chord changes and melodies that you might not come up with on a traditional instrument. Music Mouse features harmony systems where you can switch between like chromatic, diatonic, pentatonic, middle eastern, octatonic, and quartal harmony scales. Voicing can be set to parallel or contrary motion with settings, voice melody, and voice pairs. The articulation control offers Staccato, Half legato and Legato articulations. The Treatment Control offers Chord, Arpeggio, Line and Improv rhythmic selections. Sound Mode features 32 classic FM synth patches curated by Spiegel, and MIDI Mode to control external hardware or software like Ableton Live or Logic Pro.

Is Music Mouse designed for beginners or professionals? Both. Music Mouse was intentionally designed so beginners can generate harmonically rich music immediately, while experienced composers can use it as a powerful compositional and improvisational tool. $29
