Mitch Broddon: White Denim’s music found me exactly when I needed it to. When I was a senior in high school, I finally caved in and got a streaming subscription, meaning I no longer needed to rely on burning CDs from the library to find music. I found the album Corsicana Lemonade within the first week and was immediately hooked. The guitar work on every track felt sonically fresh to me, while simultaneously it was reminiscent of so many psych rock legends.
Years down the line I got a chance to see them live in 2025 at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville. I finally got to experience the sound that drew me in so quickly live, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen five band members locked in so tightly. Instantly, that felt like the north star in terms of how a live band should feel and sound. In and out of synchronized licks and improvisation seamlessly, it was raw and unfiltered live rock.
Shortly after this show, White Denim announced their 13th album 13 and announced “(God Created) Lock and Key” as their first single. And guess what? Just like it had happened before in high school; it blew my mind.
If you’re just looking for just one riff, then I picked the wrong song. Front to back this tune is lined with examples of crazy great chops and tasteful rhythmic misdirection. The guitars weave in and out of a powerful vocal line that’s soulful and commanding, it’s inspiring how well every part fits together in and out of different time signatures. A great guitar riff is only as good as the groove it sits in, and it’s locked for all three minutes of this song. I can’t get enough, every time.
