Dipsea Flower takes its name from Northern California’s legendary Dipsea Trail, a winding path through the redwoods from Mill Valley toward the Pacific. It’s fitting for a band whose story has been shaped by movement. Singer-songwriter Ari Rosenberg and guitarist Trevor Hurvitz brought their California roots east to Berklee College of Music, where the pieces of Dipsea Flower began falling into place with drummer Andy Baker and, eventually, bassist Spencer Arjang.
The current lineup came together almost by accident. Five days before a summer tour, the band found itself without a bassist. Rosenberg called his longtime friend Arjang, who joined them on the road, and somewhere between the shows, long drives, and four guys packed into a Honda Pilot, something clicked. “It immediately felt like we had a vibe,” Rosenberg says. “We all knew each other’s weaknesses and how to help each other out—and our strengths. It was really camaraderie.”
That camaraderie gives Dipsea Flower its identity. The band draws from folk and rock without becoming overly concerned about where one ends and the other begins.
What matters more is whether the music feels true. “We’re not making songs to make a product,” Rosenberg says. Arjang takes that philosophy even further: “If you’re drawing on other songs, then you’re just making songs that sound like other songs. If you’re drawing on life, you’re making songs that sound like life.”
Dipsea Flower now turns toward its second EP, Exit Stage, Enter Real, arriving Oct. 9. Rosenberg describes the record as a study in contrasts—folk and rock, sun and moon, happiness and heartbreak. The band’s latest single, “Half Step Late,” offers another glimpse of where the journey is headed. The destination may still be somewhere beyond the next turn, but for four friends discovering what they can create together, the road itself seems to be the point.
