Shining a DIY Spotlight on Halo Kitsch

MC wrote in a recent New Music Critique review (an 8.4/10 review, by the way) that alt-rocker Halo Kitsch describes herself as “underrated,” but that won’t be the case for much longer if there’s any justice. Of course, justice isn’t always readily available in the music industry, but we can hope.

For her part, the artist known as Halo Kitsch is a born performer. “I loved singing in the shower, playing Rockband, High School Musical,” she says. “I still do. As for ‘getting serious,’ I’m not sure that it ever will be serious to anything besides my own mental health. Songwriting became a sort of inhaler to me during my first year of college when I experienced symptoms of my depressive disorder for the first time and it felt sort of like I couldn’t breathe. It took weight off of my chest. I left school after two years and I suppose you could argue that it was then when I made up my mind and decided to pursue it full time.”

The artist describes her music as sounding like what the inside of her closet looks like: “Messy and raw, like ripped denim, a little punk like leather, intimate like lace, embellished with silver buckles and knuckle rings.”

Halo Kitsch’s latest release is the “American Medicine” single. “[It’s] the beginning of a new muse to me,” she says. “I think that will make more sense in a few months from now. It’s a tricky song to explain—there are so many layers in there, and hints left to interpretation, and ultimately, it’s a bit more of a collision of feelings to me than the narrative style I usually write in. But the easiest summation is simply that it is my own version of ‘love is the cure.’ And that, well, Americans need medicine.”

It’s a great track, only increasing the volume of the buzz around the artist. Halo Kitsch’s work ethic helps too. “DIY to me means, how dirty are your hands?” she says. “You’re the face of your own project, are you the arms? Legs? Mind? Heart? How many hats can you wear? And can you juggle?”
