After releasing Carry Fire, Robert Plant’s 11th solo album this past fall, he’s set out on a brief tour across North America with his backing band, The Sensational Space Shifters in support of the latest effort. Plant took his band to Toronto and performed at the historic Massey Hall.
He started the set off with four songs from his last two albums (both recorded with The Sensational Space Shifters) including “New World…” the lead track from the current album. Given that a live performance by Robert Plant is somewhat of a rare occasion these days, one could be forgiven for thinking they were about to see Plant perform a solo rendition of a Led Zeppelin concert. While the set included several Zeppelin songs (including some covers recorded by Led Zeppelin) such as “Gallow’s Pole,” That’s the Way” and “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You,” his set largely consisted of solo material with a much more contemporary vibe.
Without question, the majesty of the evening was provided by the legendary Robert Plant. At 69 years old, it’s an absolute thrill to hear that his voice is still as powerful and clean today's as it was so early on in his career. Anyone in attendance was sure to notice the incredible performances supporting him by his band, The Sensational Space Shifters. Most notably, Justin Adams on guitar was exceptional.
If you’re holding out for the Led Zeppelin reunion that may never come, don’t let the chance to see this act pass you by. Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters are on the road in support of their second collaborative effort (following 2014’s “Lullaby And…The Ceaseless Roar.” Short of a reunion with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, this is as good as it gets, and it’s a fine consolation prize.
