Lindsay Marcus--moniker MARKS--has placed her music
in indie films and ads, and here she’s a sultry vocalist and deft producer with a
gift for sonic shades and colors. Built on a classic-cool synth-pop beat (and punctuated by awesome kettledrum eruptions) the mid-tempo “Heartbeat” is a real standout, despite its need of trimming. “The Modern Life” picks up the pace, though the song is overly long. “Boom” has a nice chorus and seems to be her most commercial tune. Ultimately, Marks’ superior production skills (there’s vast depth and width in every recording) enhances material which is solid enough but not quite so killer as the best synth-pop. Still, there’re plenty of sections here that are ripe for film & TV uses.
