On Thursday, August 20, six hopefuls selected from more than 2,600 drummers across the country converged upon Hollywood’s legendary Fonda Theater. They were there to cross sticks and match chops to capture the title of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off 2026 National Finale. Crowned champion was Jonathan Fortson from the tiny town of Hamilton, Alabama.
When Fortson’s win was announced, he virtually collapsed onto the riser and basked in the glow for nearly a minute as he processed his triumph. Music Connection caught up with him at the after-party and shared a few words. “It’s incredible,” the still-stunned tub-thumper observed. “To not go past the [in-store] district [battles] in the previous years and now coming to the finals and winning is unbelievable. I couldn’t imagine winning this because there are so many musicians that compete. It’s an honor and a privilege.” He now plans to return to Hamilton and see where the winds of his win take him.
As the victor, Fortson will receive a brand endorsement, industry connections, $25,000 in cash and a complete pro-level drum setup.
Closing out the night was the impromptu band Blow Me (A.K.A. Kenny Aronoff and Friends), composed of original Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, drumming demon Aronoff and – aided and abetted by a Halen-ized Gibson SG – guitarist Phil X. The band delivered several classics including the night’s three opening numbers drawn from Van Halen’s early days: “Somebody Get Me a Doctor,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love” and “I’m the One.”
Drum-Off ran for 28 years starting in 1988. Following a ten-year hiatus, it returned this year in full fighting form with a judging panel that included legends the likes of Tré Cool of Green Day, Josh Freese (The Vandals, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle) and ferocious female drummer Pocket Queen (Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Alicia Keys). The evening was helmed by noted comedian Bill Burr (who’s also a drummer) and past Drum-Off host and skin-beater Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros, etc.).
Previous Drum-Offs have been (ahem) instrumental in the careers of drummers such as Cora Coleman-Dunham (Prince, Beyoncé), Tony Royster Jr. (Jay-Z, Katy Perry) and Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta).
Although operated under several different names over the years, the Fonda Theater will turn 100 this October. Plans are afoot to mark the centennial with a smorgasbord of special shows.
