Rock history added another permanent imprint on Sunset Boulevard this week as Billy Idol and guitarist Steve Stevens were officially inducted into the Hollywood Rockwalk, the long-running sidewalk tribute outside Guitar Center that honors artists whose influence has shaped the sound and culture of music.
Owned and operated by Guitar Center since 1985, Rockwalk has become one of the most recognizable public landmarks in music culture—a place where the names etched into concrete double as a living timeline of modern sound. The addition of Idol and Stevens feels especially fitting given how deeply their work has already seeped into guitar culture, stage performance, and the broader language of rock.
Guitar Center CEO Gabe Dalporto highlighted that legacy in a statement that underscored the duo’s unique musical chemistry. “Billy Idol and Steve Stevens didn’t just write hits—they built a partnership where a punk frontman and a virtuoso guitarist made each other sharper. The ‘Rebel Yell’ intro alone has inspired generations of guitar players. Walk into any Guitar Center on a Saturday, and you’ll still hear someone chasing that tone. That’s the definition of Rockwalk-worthy,” he said.
That tone—equal parts swagger and precision—runs through some of the most recognizable rock staples of the 1980s. From “White Wedding” to “Rebel Yell,” and the atmospheric shine of “Eyes Without a Face” to the high-gloss theatricality of “Flesh for Fantasy,” Idol and Stevens helped define a version of rock music that was both arena-sized and artful. Idol’s unmistakable voice and punk-era attitude paired with Stevens’ cinematic guitar work created a sound that still feels oddly modern, even decades later.

Speaking about the induction, Idol reflected on the long relationship between the duo and the music retail world that helped shape their early experimentation. “Steve and I have spent so much of our lives around music shops, trying new things while working hard to perfect our sound, with Guitar Center right at the center of it all,” he said. “Being inducted into the Rockwalk together feels like a real full circle moment after all these years of making music side-by-side.”
Stevens echoed that sentiment while looking toward the next generation of players discovering their own sound. “It’s absolutely awesome that Billy Idol and I will be inducted into the Guitar Center Rockwalk,” he said. “We join some of the greatest musicians ever in this honor. I hope some young guitarist looks down at our impressions and marches inside to buy his first guitar, just as I did. This building is filled with dreams and possibilities. All you need is desire and passion.”
Adding further context to the honor, Todd Lauer, SVP, Brand Marketing & Creative at Guitar Center, emphasized the broader cultural impact of the induction: “Billy Idol and Steve Stevens are exactly the kind of artists Rockwalk was created to honor. Their influence extends far beyond their recordings, inspiring generations of musicians to pick up an instrument and develop their own sound. That's something we've seen firsthand at Guitar Center for decades, where legendary artists continue to inspire the next generation of players.”
The Rockwalk itself has long functioned as both monument and meeting point between music history and everyday discovery. With more than 150 inductees, it places Idol and Stevens alongside a lineage that includes Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Janis Joplin, Black Sabbath, The Ramones, and many more—artists whose influence continues to shape how music is played, recorded, and performed.
Located at the entrance of Guitar Center’s flagship Hollywood store, the Rockwalk remains one of the rare places where music history is physically embedded into the street, blending tourism, pilgrimage, and everyday guitar-store reality into a single cultural snapshot. The upcoming induction ceremony will take place on-site, continuing its tradition of turning recognition into a public celebration rather than a closed industry moment.
