In advance of Ghost’s upcoming live concert film 2 Big To Rig, set for release next week, Kodak House hosted a conversation with the film’s cinematographer, Dylan Sanford.
The intimate session saw Sanford discussing his approach to capturing the band’s performances from behind the camera during their stop in Mexico City as a part of their most recent ‘Skeletour’ world tour.
Moderated by acclaimed production designer Kasra Farahani, the conversation began with Sanford discussing how he became involved in the project, sharing some of his favorite clips from the film, and then reflecting on technical challenges faced along the way, including the last-minute cancellation of one out of three originally planned concerts after Ghost frontman Tobias Forge came down with a severe case of food poisoning.
Captured entirely on 16mm film to give the movie a look reminiscent of Queen’s 1981 concert film Rock Montreal, 2 Big To Rig was captured using seven cameras across two sold-out shows.
Sanford shared that the goal was to present the concert from an audience member’s perspective, creating an immersive experience for any viewer to feel like they’ve been transported straight to the front row.
