Kevn Kinney of Southern rockers Drivin' N Cryin' old us about his '80s college rock influences...
Kevn Kinney: I wanted a song on the record that reminded me of 1980’s college radio. I use the chorus pedal to get that '80s sound. The verses are a minor to a major giving it a bit of an R.E.M feel, then in between parts of the verse are half time.
I love how it all sets up the simple chorus with a bit of a homage to The Rolling Stones "Paint it Black.” And to get that R.E.M feel why not drive to Athens, Georgia and ask Peter Buck to play that iconic 12-string at David Barbe’s studio. For the outro, I’m using the Back Talk pedal. It’s like a reverse pedal. I was listening to the new Cure record a lot!"
Drivin' N Cryin's album Crushing Flowers is out now.
