The Riff That Blew My Mind: Among Legends Dig Drive Like Jehu

Bennett Rouleau of Ontario punk trio Among Legends told us about his love for a Drive Like Jehu lick...

Bennett Rouleau: The riff that blew my mind is the bass and guitar intro to "Here Come the Rome Plows" from Yank Crime, by Drive Like Jehu.

Someone recommended the album to me years ago and it took all of fifteen seconds of the opening track for me to be fully engrossed. Mike Kennedy's driving bass gives you barely any time to prepare for the lightning strike of John Reis and Rich Froberg's guitars - it's angular, noisy, ferocious and, in my opinion, absolutely perfect.

In spending time with this record, I seriously reconsidered my own approach on the instrument and the result was certainly impacted by the sonic approach on this song (and the rest of the album!) I've spent a lot of time searching for more music with guitars that hit me in a similar way; I have a feeling I'll be searching for a long time.

Among Legends' Lose My Grip album is out now.
