Styx at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, CA

In two years, Styx will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of their debut album. To this day, the group continues to tour annually throughout the US and worldwide. It seems to have become an annual tradition for the band to hit the Saban the first two weeks of January. Recently, Styx returned to the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles with a show full of hits.

Styx's Saban show was broken into two sets. Their latest album The Mission came out in 2017. The group continues to play a few songs from it each show. Set one began with "Gone Gone Gone" from their new album and ended with "Suite Madame Blue." Panozzo joined in for the ninth song of the set—"Fooling Yourself"—and returned again later.

Set two opened with the classic "Miss America," which features Young on lead vocals. Shaw then took over the stage to play the opening verse of his supergroup Damn Yankees' hit "Come Again."  This led to "Crystal Ball" where the rest of the group joined in. It was great to see Styx play "Pieces of Eight" this time since it hasn't been played at the last few LA shows.

Just before "Come Sail Away," Gowan played a solo and a medley of songs including tributes to music greats who had passed. With the passing of Rush drummer, Neil Peart on Jan. 7, Gowan has added "Limelight" into his solo. Following the verse he played, Gowan said, "Thank you, Neil Peart, for those words and all you did for music." Panozzo returned once again for "Come Sail Away."

Styx returned for an encore starting with "Mr. Roboto." For over 30 years, "Mr. Roboto" was not performed live other than short parts in their old opening medley. On May 30, 2018, Styx played the song for the first time in its entirety at the Five Point Amphitheater in Irvine, CA, which was the opening night of their tour with Joan Jett and Tesla. Since then, it has been a part of every show.  As always, the night ended with "Renegade" and Panozzo joined in as well. Styx is the type of band that can play not only the same city multiple times a year but even some of the same venues each time and bring in new fans including ones that have seen the group over 10 times like myself. As of now, Styx has dates booked all the way through July 25.
