In a sweet little bait-and-switch, Ruby Otis is the name of a band, not a solo artist. Don’t worry, we fell for it too. In fact, the singer in Ruby Otis is Los Angeles native Sabrina Judge, a woman who puts massive amounts of emotion and swagger into her vocals. The song “Weather Systems” is reminiscent of ‘80s alt-pop duo Shakespear’s Sister (remember “Stay?”), with Judge sharing a jazzy croon with that group’s Marcella Detroit. That Lynchian lounge-club feel continues on “Hold On” and “Ready, Set, Free,” from the self-titled debut album. It’s a classic light/dark dichotomy, and there’s a lot to explore here.
