It’s been six years since pianist Mayer was in these pages, with MC saying at the time that “Mayer seems to have a mainstream ear and the skills to render smooth, catchy, vanilla-sweet instrumental music.” We nailed it then, and nothing has changed in that regard. Recent tunes such as “Prague Sunrise” showcase Mayer’s ability to convey a ton of feelings in what is often the most delicate, almost minimal musicianship. The guy is so skilled, such a master of his instrument, that it almost feels like he’s singing on songs like “Heart of an Angel" and “New Beginnings.” That’s a rare skill.
