Modest Hits is Justin Schaefers’ debut solo album, after years in bands like Winkler and Doss. It’s also a brilliant oxymoron, when you really dig into it. “I am excited to put myself out into the world in ways that I haven’t before,” Schaefers recently told MC, and it’s fitting that he’s buzzing. Songs such as “Nuthin” and “Silver” showcase the artist’s ability to say and convey a lot, while keeping the tunes relatively sparse and simple. The songwriting is frankly brilliant; “Bad Head” might be the best of a great bunch. Thirty minutes in Schaefers’ company is 30 minutes well spent.
