Right from the early, eerie opening notes of “Casey’s Last Ride,” Nick Cave is the name that blasts into your head. Yeah, classic outlaw country artists such a Johnny Cash are in there, too. But it’s the dark, weary, Gothically beautiful elements that make this outfit interesting. Tom Waits and his anthems to hard-living are also prominent.
It’s all so dark, and yet so gorgeous. “The Loon” is essentially agony; a drone of pain that quickly turns into ecstasy thanks to some expert song writing, and a deft touch when it comes to melody.
