Bobbo Byrnes operates in a self-described musical purgatory: “too rock for folk, too folk for rock.” It’s a tidy summary, and mostly true.
Nothing here demands your attention, but nothing here squanders it either—this is lowkey, heartfelt songwriting from someone who’s clearly logged the hours, over a dozen albums deep and counting. It’s thoroughly solid songwriting from a seasoned artist, though you can’t help but wish he’d occasionally kick down the boundaries he’s settled into.
The next move isn’t more of the same—it’s finding the edges of his sound and finally leaning past them.
