Electropop duo MDNT DRV emit a mood and a message that is persistent in its darkness, with lyrics that dwell on the struggle to rebound from doomed relationships. “Above The Water,” in particular, explores the “bottom of the ocean floor” and the fight to keep from “drowning.” The duo’s lead vocalist has an ideal tone for this kind of music, and its a consistent strength of all three of these tracks. However, he is saddled with lyrics that quite often (as in “Lonely”) veer into cliche (“I don’t know how I’m gonna survive”). The song “Over It” offers a glimmer of optimism amidst the gloom, but in a way that is lyrically shallow. (“I can see the light somehow”). We urge this duo to hook up with a poetic lyricist.
