Detroit trio Hyperiff are led by Serana Slade, whose powerful, emotive and versatile voice impresses us as it imbues the band’s melodic metal-tinged material with rock operatics. Yes, there is a theatrical element to Slade’s delivery, which suggests she’s had experience in musical theater and even jazz, not to mention possibly influenced by the altogether un-metal Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.  And while Hyperiff’s material—”Give it to Me” with its colorful guitar solo; the ‘80s metal piano ballad “Take Me Back,” and the dramatic, disjointed, distress-filled “Simple Dreams”—isn’t so memorable, there is real talent here. Not only are Slade’s pipes terrific but the guitar work is well above average. and should not be under-estimated.
