MC: There is a great old theater in San Pedro called the Warner Grand that we have been to. Have you ever performed there?
Miguel: I love that theater! I’m glad you been there. I actually never performed there, but it has been on my mind that I want to go back and play there. I grew up less than five blocks away.
MC: You utilize some interesting samples including the jazz guitarist O’Donel Levy. How did you come by your depth of knowledge about musical history?
Miguel: I have to thank my father for my music education. He was very open-minded about all kinds of music.
MC: We note that your parents divorced when you were young, but you spent considerable time with both of them. It has been reported that your mom was more conservative, while your father was more open.
Miguel: My dad was really easygoing. He does what he feels. He is more liberal than my mother was.
MC: Do you prefer using old gear? We saw a picture of a Roland Space Echo on Instagram. What can you tell us about your home studio?
Miguel: That Space Echo is mine––I’ve always loved analog gear, vintage, old synths. My studio is evolving now, because I’ve got a new place. Right now it’s a mess––it looks like a fucking laboratory. That’s typical, kind of living in the studio.
MC: Some people find it hard to leave work, if they have a studio in their house.
Miguel: I love performing and being on the road so much, but I love recording too. There is a comfort you find when you get into your rhythm and you really dig in and start digging deep. And also when you are moving and in this constant state of flux. I love both. I have time for both now.
