Lustmord Lombardo is the pairing of ambient icon Lustmord, and drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Misfits, Dead Cross, etc). Lustmord told us about his love for his Mac...
Lustmord: The one piece of equipment that has made the most significant impact on what I do is the humble Mac.
As someone with no formal music or technical training who approaches composition from the perspective of sound design, much of what I do just isn’t possible without raw computing power and audio software.
My first Mac was the IIci in 1991 and I quickly became a "Power User" and upgraded regularly over the years as newer models meant more ability. From 2006 I’ve been a MacPro user, usually maxing out RAM and HD storage, but I now run a Studio Mac as it’s come to the point where the middle ground of what is available is enough power for what I need.
On the software side, the one essential item in my arsenal is Audio Ease's Altiverb XL convolution reverb. In the early 80’s I’d make my own location recordings to capture a particular sound only certain locations offered, but it was a pain in the ass technically, using early digital recording equipment as the battery packs were heavy and cumbersome and a real chore to carry around, especially when entering “restricted” (cough) spaces. Since reverb space and/or room tone are very important aspects of my sound, Altiverb allows me to drop my raw sounds into a wide range of acoustic spaces, including some I recorded myself, and get the exact tone I need. Other convolution reverbs exist, but Altiverb is the best for my needs.
