Album Review: "Top Shelf" by Laura Ainsworth (9/10)

Eclectus Records/Ratspack Records • Producer: Brian Piper • Specializing in the Great American Songbook, jazz vocalist Ainsworth releases a deluxe package featuring cuts from her acclaimed albums including New Vintage. Essentially, the vibrant redhead’s shtick infuses standards and deep tracks with irony, humor and indelible charm. It’s a modern reinterpretation and reinvention of beloved Tin Pan Alley fare like “Skylark,” “Love For Sale” and “My Foolish Heart.” But she also pulls out the stops on the hard swinging pseudo-biographical “That’s How I Got My Start,” the film noir-ish “Necessary Evil” and the playful “An Occasional Man.”
