Hit the Decks! It's Champion

U.K. underground electronic artist Champion started DJing when he was 11, in 2001.

"My Dad has a sound system and used to provide the music for all the family parties," Champion says. "I got hooked on the idea from then. So between him and one of our close friends Cyrus, they brought me with them to parties and taught me on the road. Production came later when I was around 15 with the rise of Grime music, I found out a lot of the music was made using software that I could get on the family computer (FL Studio) and that inspired me to start."

"Things got serious when I was 18 when a UK funky song I made blew up ("Tribal Affair"). From there I decided to focus more on production to help source DJ bookings, and I’ve been working ever since."

Champion describes his sound as, "An inner city, British Caribbean twist on all things music focused around minimalism and sonic richness."

That can be heard on recent release "Lose My Mind, with Interplanetary Criminal and Crookers."

"Initially a sketch myself and Crookers started remotely, then Interplanetary Criminal and I decided to develop into what it is today," Champion says. "I had some sessions booked in with IPC in London to just get creative, we’ve done a few things but the minute the 'Lose My Mind' sketch was pulled up, we both naturally started smashing through the idea and pretty much got the whole track done in no time."

As for gear: "My main DAW is FL Studio," he says. "I record vocals in Logic and sometimes pull things out of Ableton, and Reason when it calls for it. My go-to soundcard is anything RME but mainly the Babyface. My favorite VSTs are anything Fabfilter and Kilohearts, Shaperbox and Serum. I have a Neve 1073, LA-2A & 1176 for my outboard vocal chain."

Looking ahead, Champion has plenty planned for 2026. "I’ve got some wicked North America dates, an India tour and a big run of singles leading to an EP to drop in the new year so it’s looking to be an exciting start!"
