Haylie Davis Can't Do Without Her 1974 Gibson J-40

Laurel Canyon singer and songwriter Haylie Davis told us about her Gibson love...

Haylie Davis: My 1974 Gibson J-40. She’s big and bold, and forever has my heart. I have two guitars, and this one goes with me everywhere. It’s plays so easily, and just has a special sound. Since I don’t have many instruments, each one I acquire almost develops a personality. I play this Gibson so much that it feels like an extension of myself at a certain point. You can hear it on my newest record and at every show I play.

I bought it from a friend for $1100, which is quite a deal for this kind of guitar. I was working as a waitress and bought it with the money I’d saved up. This was one of the biggest purchases I had ever made up until that point so I was nervous, but I knew in my gut that guitar was mine. It’s funny because every so often, and throughout the years, my friend will still say he regrets selling me that guitar.

Haylie Davis' "Wandering Star" single is out now. The album of the same name is out June 5.
