For the first time in 10 years, Céline Dion has embarked on a full North American tour. In support of her brand-new album, Courage, Dion brought her tour to Buffalo, NY on Dec. 5th as she performed at the KeyBank Center to a packed house.
Prior to this evening, I’d never seen Céline Dion perform live. Her albums were among a handful of CDs my mom would constantly have playing on our carousel CD player at home on the weekends, so I went into this show with considerable background on most of her catalog. I was eager to see, almost 30 years into her professional career, what kind of show she would put on. Surely, after spending over a decade in Las Vegas during her residency, there was going to be something special to this show.
Dion opened the show with “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” in an apropos way, as if to welcome her fans back to the show after such a long absence. She then segued into “That’s the Way It Is,” another hit from the 1990s. By this point, it was clear that Dion hasn’t lost an ounce of the power and punch that she’s become known for.
Throughout the evening, Dion took several opportunities to engage with the crowd and share a few stories, all while delivering hit after hit. Several of the top selections throughout the evening included “The Power of Love,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “All by Myself” and “Because You Loved Me.”
She told a brief story of how she first heard John Farnham’s “You’re the Voice.” She engaged the audience to teach them the chorus and before launching into the song. Later, before performing “Courage,” the title track from her new album, she thanked the crowd for their unwavering support during her more difficult times. While she didn’t mention her late husband by name, it seemed the audience knew full-well that she was drawing strength from them while she was on, what amounts to, a comeback tour, following his passing in 2016.
The main set was closed out featuring a dynamite mash-up of hits including David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Prince’s “Kiss,” Ike and Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High” and Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade.”
After a brief break, Céline Dion and her band returned to the stage for an encore led by “My Heart Will Go On,” arguably her largest hit, before closing out the evening with a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
I’m a firm believer that you’ve got to see every artist at least once, at least whenever it’s possible. For anyone who has had the chance to see Céline Dion live in the past, go check out her current tour if you can. She brings an incredible performance to the stage and you’ll surely be left blown away!
