At the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, Aimee Mann performed material from her latest release, Mental Illness, as well as previous favorites including "Save Me."
Joined on a spare stage by varying members of her touring band, including Paul Bryant (who produced the album) on bass and vocals, Mann's voice was as haunting and pure as ever. Fluid keyboardist Jamie Edwards also provided vocals. Jonathan Coulter (who opened the show) contributed vocals, barbs and guitar on several songs. A string quartet added emotion to several numbers, and subtle drumming and percussion rounded out the intimate performance.
Mann's encore set featured her version of Harry Nilsson's "One." Always known for her wry wit, Mann did not fail to provide plenty of patter and quips (sometimes playing off a vocal and spirited audience) that seemed genuine and relaxed, while not detracting from the true star, the material.
