AFI at the Hollywood Palladium

2021 marked AFI’s 30th anniversary and to celebrate the band played two shows at the Hollywood Palladium (3/25 & 26). The band formed in Ukiah, CA which is in Northern CA. Since 1998 the band has been Davey Havock (Lead Vocals), Adam Carson (Drums), Hunter Burgan (Bass), and Jade Puget (Guitar/Keys). AFI released their debut album Answer That and Stay Fashionable in 1995 and just last year released their 11th studio album Bodies. The release had been delayed a year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and now the band is finally able to tour. AFI most recently toured in 2019 alongside Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds opening for The Smashing Pumpkins. Opening the show was Mothermary formed by twin sisters Elyse and Larena Winn.

AFI’s setlist changed between the two shows but opened with “Strength Through Wounding” both nights. Night one included the live debuts of “The Missing Man,” “Escape From Los Angeles,” “Dulceria,” and “Tied to a Tree.” Both nights included their biggest hits “17 Crimes,” “Days of the Phoenix,” and “Miss Murder.” For night two AFI played a two song encore of “Morningstar,” and “Silver and Gold.” The band moved around the stage non-stop and Havock jumped off the drum riser several times throughout the night. Of all the Palladium shows I’ve been to, this may have been the most packed. The band sounds great and it’s easy to see how dedicated their fan base is knowing every song. It was great to see the band finally able to perform their new music nine months after Bodies was released and two years after it was recorded.

AFI’s tour begins in October and runs through December hitting major cities all across the U.S.
