Education Over Enforcement: When the International Music Software Trade Association (IMSTA) was founded in 2003, its members faced a growing dilemma: how best to address music-software piracy in an industry where unauthorized copies could directly affect the companies and people creating the tools musicians depend on. Rather than making litigation the centerpiece, the organization chose education, with the simple philosophy that changing behavior requires understanding the consequences. “Buy the software you use” remains IMSTA’s guiding message, emphasizing that software is the product of real people’s creativity, investment and labor, whether it comes from a one-person operation or a major company. Executive Director Paul Fattahi, who has been involved with IMSTA since 2007, says the organization continues tracking attitudes through its annual piracy survey and is seeing more users advocate for legitimate software use. The larger point, he notes, is that musicians have a vested interest in keeping software companies healthy so they can continue providing technical support, upgrades and the next generation of creative tools.

IMSTA FESTA Brings Technology Face-to-Face: That educational philosophy comes vividly to life through IMSTA FESTA, the organization’s free events for musicians, songwriters, producers, engineers, students and educators across North America, Europe and Asia. Combining software and hardware exhibits with demonstrations, workshops, industry panels and master classes, IMSTA FESTA gives creators an opportunity to interact directly with the companies behind their tools while learning from accomplished professionals. Past and current presenters have included Grammy-winning engineers, producers and songwriters, with 2026 events featuring such names as Jimmy Douglass, Lu Diaz, Supa Dups, Zaytoven, Major Seven and Preston “Prizzie” Reid. Past participants include Harvey Mason Jr., Noah ‘40’ Shebib, T-Minus, Young Guru, !llmind, Darkchild, Dave Pensando, Tony Maserati and many more distinguished music industry leaders. Song reviews provide another hands-on component, offering creators professional feedback at no cost. Accessibility is intentional. By eliminating an admission fee, IMSTA makes education available to musicians who might otherwise never have access to this kind of industry gathering.

Developing the Next Generation of Creators: IMSTA’s songwriting competitions take that philosophy one step further, turning education into opportunity. Regional competitions are held in conjunction with IMSTA FESTA events, while standout songs can advance toward the annual IMSTA Songwriting Competition, where the grand prize includes more than $5,000 worth of music software. Recent winners demonstrate the range of creators working with today’s technology, from Miami’s Nico Grana and his self-produced pop to Atlanta’s Shy Bunny, an SAE graduate who combines R&B, rap and pop with hands-on studio expertise. For Fattahi, however, the real reward is watching the caliber of participants improve and seeing musicians return year after year. With a newsletter reaching roughly 20,000 people and Managing Director Ray Williams—part of IMSTA since its inception—continuing to play a central role, the organization has grown beyond its original anti-piracy mission into a global community built around education, ethical software use and the shared understanding that healthy technology companies and healthy music-making communities need each other to thrive.
