Album Review: Map of the Soul: Persona by BTS (6/10)

"The album takes you on a journey of self discovery or as the title tells, journey finding ‘persona.’"

“Who am I? The question I had my whole life/ The question which I probably won’t find an answer to my whole life” is the translation to the first two lines of the intro song for BTS’s 2019 album Map of Soul: Persona. The album takes you on a journey of self discovery or as the title tells, journey finding ‘persona.’ Overall, it’s creative and doable as a concept, but it doesn’t seem to be showcased until the very last song. The album has mainstream pop sound with heavy beats and rap here and there. Four out of the six songs were general love songs meant to draw people in with repetition and synthy beats. The most standout song from the album is called "Dionysus," and it’s upbeat, celebratory tone embraced the theme of ‘persona’ the best as it solidifies the finality in BTS’s acceptance of themselves as artists. At first I was a little disappointed it took until the last song to hear something close enough to their old sound, but listening to this new album, I can see they are moving on to a new sound and their transformation is inevitable.
