Album Review: In the Late Hours by Impala (7/10)

If you’re a fan of ‘60s spaghetti westerns, Tarantino flicks, Dick Dale and The Ventures, along with noir-tinged jazz and blues, Impala is talking your language. This group of veteran Memphis session and sidemen has been keeping that retro cool instrumental flame burning since the early ‘90s. This album marks their return to the recording and live scene in over a decade. Bassist and producer Scott Bomar, in addition to his duties with Impala, has also been the main thrust behind neo-soulsters The Bo-Keys and has scored films like Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan. The result here is a seamless blend of classic Stax wax, with contemporary attitude.
