Bloomsbury has announced their open call for submissions for their 33 1/3 book series--short books about popular music. Focusing on individual albums by artists ranging from James Brown to Celine Dion and from J Dilla to Neutral Milk Hotel, each volume in the 33 1/3 series provides a platform for authors to obsessively explore a piece of music without restriction. Each album covered in the series occupies a specific place in music history, so each book-length treatment is different.
104. Devo’s Freedom of Choice (1980) by Evie Nagy
105. Dead Kennedys’ Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980) by Michael Stewart Foley
106. Koji Kondo’s Super Mario Bros. (1985) by Andrew Schartmann
107. Beat Happening’s Beat Happening (1985) by Byran C. Parker (9/24/15)
108. Metallica’s Metallica (1991) by David Masciotra (9/24/15)
Proposals are due by Monday, July 27, 2015 at 12:00am EST (midnight). As of June 1 the submission period is open.
This open call is only for those who are 100% positive that if their proposals are selected, they will be able to turn in final manuscripts within 6-12 months of contract. That means the whole book—all 30,000 words of it—will be due between January and August 2016. Missed deadlines will result in cancellation of the contract. There will be other open calls for delivery dates beyond August 2016 within the next two years.
If you are a college or high school student and under the age of 22, please consider submitting to Bloomsbury's Under 22 ONLY open call. Details can be found here.
If you would like to submit a proposal for a 33 1/3 volume, please submit all of the following to firstname.lastname@example.org before 12:00am EST on July 27. No exceptions.
The word/page counts below are not exact, but should point you in the right direction of what Bloomsbury is looking for. Submissions that don’t include complete responses to the first nine requirements below will not be considered.
Submit the content below in one single document as either .doc, .docx or .pdf. No .rtf files will be accepted. Please put your name, album and artist in the subject line of the email.
