Vallejo-born singer, rapper, and songwriter Mai Mai has released new single and video "Why Me?," her Warner debut, and it's chill soul number that serves as the perfect summer kick-off.
"Built around warm basslines, dreamy melodies, and a laid-back groove, 'Why Me?' finds Mai Mai wrestling with insecurity and self-worth as she questions whether she's deserving of the love being offered to her," the press release reads. "Blending melodic rap, soulful vocals, and diary-like songwriting, the track highlights the rare authenticity that's quickly setting her apart from her peers: 'I might have to let him know slowly, that I ain’t ready for nobody, I’m still growing / I can’t wait to say this is the old me, but I ain’t ready to be anybody’s trophy.'"
The video is simple but effective; the artist is floating in deep red, sporting an elegant gown. Meanwhile, the lyrics pop off around her.
