Niko Moon has spent his career selling sunshine—beachy escapism, good-time anthems, the whole triple-platinum "GOOD TIME" vibe. But his new album ROOTS, out now via EMPIRE, trades the beach chair for the front porch. This time, Moon isn't running toward paradise. He's running back home.
"ROOTS is all about my roots as a person," Moon says. "Where I came from, who I love, how I live and what I believe." Simple enough on paper, but ROOTS is anything but a surface-level trip down memory lane. It's Moon pulling back the curtain on the childhood that built his relentless optimism: a young mother, a truck-driving father, a run of trailers and extended-stay motels before family, community and music gave him something to stand on.
That's the emotional spine of the record. Sonically, it's a road map—Georgia, Texas, Nashville. "The album is inspired by the places that raised me and the sounds I grew up around," Moon shared in a statement. "I wanted it to feel honest and lived-in, like sitting around with family and friends, sharing stories and remembering what really matters."
And he means lived-in literally. Unlike anything he's made before, ROOTS was written entirely on the road. "I wrote this entire album while being on tour. This is my first time writing on the road and I loved it!" Moon says. "I can feel the energy of the backstage green rooms these songs were written in when I listen to the songs." Every track basically comes with its own greenroom ghost attached.
Then there's "GEORGIA (ROOTS)," the album's hometown tribute—and the closest Moon came to a genuine studio panic attack. He built the song around a sample of Ray Charles' "Georgia On My Mind" before clearing it. "I was operating on faith," he admits. The faith paid off in dramatic, last-minute fashion: "After recording the song and one day before shooting the music video for the song I found out it was cleared by the Ray Charles Estate!" One day. That's not a paperwork win, that's a plot twist.
The rest of ROOTS rounds out Moon's range without ever losing the thread. "AMERICAN DREAMIN'" carries the family resilience at the record's core—and it's the one Moon keeps coming back to. "'American Dreamin,' it's the story of my life and hopefully it encourages others to turn their dreams into reality," he says. "GET COUNTRY" brings the dirt-on-your-boots energy, "RICH MAN" leans into love and perspective, and together they paint an artist who's looked back honestly instead of leaving anything behind.
Don't expect any moping, though, Moon's not capable of it. "Roots continues my mission of making positive music, I literally have no sad songs," he says. "Life is a beautiful thing and this album is a celebration of that." If you're hoping he was going to sneak a breakup ballad in there, wrong artist. What he does want you to walk away with is bigger than any one song: "Encouragement," he says. "Everyone who listens to this album will hopefully feel inspired to love deeper, chase their dreams and above all celebrate life."
Moon gave ROOTS a proper Nashville send-off, too—a family-friendly release party at Maggie's Place on July 15, followed by a Grand Ole Opry set the night before the album dropped. Now he's taking it everywhere. After a run of summer dates, Moon launches his BACK TO MY ROOTS headline tour September 11th in Youngstown, OH, hitting Chattanooga, Columbus, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale and more. "On tour all this year across the U.S. and the Roots Tour kicks off this fall!" he says.
For an artist who built his name on good times, ROOTS leans into something richer: the kind of joy that’s lived-in, not just lit up.
