Venezuelan-born, L.A.-based virtuoso Felix Martin isn’t so much pushing boundaries as rebuilding instruments entirely. Literally. Armed with a self-designed, multi-string (either a 12, 14, or 16-stringer to be exact) double-neck guitar, Martin bypasses any potential gimmickry through sheer, mind-boggling technical proficiency. To witness such an intricate instrument is one thing, but to hear it meticulously executed on a track like “Gatherpiece” is another entirely. The intricate tapping and rhythmic complexity require a staggering level of skill and dexterity and his unique blend of metal intensity with Latin rhythmic nuance keeps everything fresh and enticing.
