This lo-fi, L.A.-based artist has made a collection of bedroom-style recordings whose spare, sombre arrangements amid generous amounts of reverb capture a well-enunciated voice whose persona is equal parts intelligent and innocent.  “James” is just her voice (sometimes doubled for harmonies) and an acoustic guitar. There’s more production finesse on “Strangers,” with its strings and piano layers as city-bound Kika expresses her yearning for the country life. Her gift for subtle sonics continues on the atmospheric “I Am Not A Hateful Person, But For You I Can Be” whose arrangement features a full band, though perhaps too much feedback. In any case, this artist’s smart vocal presence is impressive.
