Walking into the Greek Theatre with a sea of people wearing pink and glow-in-the-dark cowboy hats, I figured out right away they were all there to see one person, Kacey Musgraves. The country singer-songwriter sold-out the first Greek show date of Oh, What a World Tour and everyone was eager with excitement to witness her return to Los Angeles. And what a treat it was!
Musgraves, dressed in a simple but chic black outfit, began her set with a low light rendition of her hit “Slow Burn.” For her Aug. 23 show, the songstress performed a total of 19 songs (no encore) with most coming from her latest album Golden Hour.
I’ve seen a lot of shows through the years and this is the first show I’ve seen with so many people singing along to every song. It would get so loud at times, Musgraves would occasionally let the crowd sing by themselves to the music. Especially on songs like "Follow Your Arrow" which has with the witty lines "Make lots of noise / Kiss lots of boys / Or kiss lots of girls / If that's something you're into."
Tears were also dropped when Musgraves performed "Mother," a song she dedicated to all the mothers in the crowd, and "Rainbow," a piano ballad anthem for those facing adversity particularly in the LGBTQ community. The crowd loved Musgraves, they even sang a belated "Happy Birthday" for her which Musgraves jokingly said, "Thanks guys, I'm assuming you guys bought me presents. Haha, no my birthday present is your presence...get it." The way Musgraves performed with her six-member band was also fun to watch as sometimes it felt like a big jam band, just them and their instruments jamming out and having fun. The night went on with fun banter from Musgraves, great music and ended on a high note with the contagiously happy dance-pop-country tune "High Horse."
Musgraves’ music is witty and personable. She’s a breath of fresh air to the country music scene with her social commentaries and lyrics of vulnerability. For more on Musgraves, visit kaceymusgraves.com.
