The glorious thing about James Domestic’s book is that it’s never really clear what it actually is. Is it a memoir? Not really. Autobiography? Not at all. It helps to know that Domestic, formerly of hardcore band The Domestics, considers himself a performance poet.
“Being a performance poet, rather than solely a poet of the page, means that you regularly expose yourself—not literally—to a roomful of readymade critics whose reaction will make it abundantly clear (sometimes too bloody clear!) when a line doesn’t land quite right and may need revision.” So it’s all slightly uncomfortable, in an other-worldly way. Enjoy!
