Hendrix Frankenreiter grew up surrounded by music. It took him two decades to admit he was one of the people making it. Now, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and surfer from Hawaii has officially signed to Severance Records/Big Loud Rock, marking the moment with his label debut single, “Wanna Go.”
Son of pro-surfer/musician Donovan Frankenreiter, Hendrix spent his childhood bouncing around the globe, picking up sounds wherever he landed and absorbing lessons from family friends like Jack Johnson. But it took him a while to actually call any of it a career. “Guitar has always been in my life. Growing up, I had a band from elementary into middle school, and that’s where my love for singing and guitar started! I never really took music seriously until I was about 20 years old,” he says.
Don’t ask him to define his sound though, as it’s always in flux. “My sound keeps changing every time I pick up the guitar. My inspiration pulls from a variety of music. Whatever is exciting me in the moment is my sound,” he says. It’s less a genre than a mood, and Hendrix seems perfectly happy leaving it that way. His writing process follows the same logic: get out of the way and let it happen. “I’m inspired to play and write because I never know what’s gonna come through! I believe ideas and music are already floating around waiting to be created through your own filter of expression!”
The Severance Records/Big Loud Rock deal, by his account, wasn’t so much chased as it was met. “The moment I met Big Loud Rock/Severance Records, I had a good feeling. We all connected, and everything organically just fell into place,” he says, crediting his team for making it possible in the first place.
“Wanna Go”—produced and co-written by Adam Friedman (Quinn XCII, Mike Posner, O.A.R)—was born in two places: the lyrics in Hawaii, chasing a guitar riff that wouldn’t leave him alone, and the finished song in L.A., at Friedman’s studio. “Adam always brings the best out of me in the studio. He’s an amazing human! We had so much fun working on this song together.” The two have been quietly stacking up material for the past year, which Hendrix describes as “a beautiful body of work”—and this single is just the opening move. “I’m so stoked to get this music out into the world.”
He’s already made his festival debut at BeachLife, with Fuji Rock in Japan next on the calendar. And if there’s a thesis running underneath all of it, it’s this: stop trying to get it perfect. “You will never create something you’re completely satisfied with. And that’s okay!"
