Nobody wakes up a villain. It's a slow accumulation—the passive-aggressive text left on read, the promotion that went to someone else, the friend who chose sides. By the time the transformation is complete, it doesn't feel sudden, it feels earned.
This week's Ear Candy is built around that arc, the one every good antagonist gets and most pop stars have lived through at least once. We're not talking about villains in the cartoonish sense (no capes or secret lairs). We mean the quieter kind: the ex who stopped explaining himself, the artist who got tired of being likable, the narrator who decided being understood mattered less than being right. The songs here track that shift in real time, from the first flicker of resentment to the moment someone stops apologizing for taking up space.
Sonically, that means brooding low-end and vocals that curdle from wounded to weaponized somewhere around the bridge—hooks with teeth. Some tracks play the transformation for camp, all theatrical delivery and villain-monologue energy. Others play it dead serious, letting the production do the menacing for them. Either way, the throughline holds: something happened, and whoever's singing decided they were done being the good guy about it.
There's no redemption arc waiting at the end of this playlist, and that's the point. Not every story needs one—some of them are more interesting without it.
