Cornelia Murr Can't Do Without Her Silvertone Electric Guitar

Singer and songwriter Cornelia Murr told us about her love for her Silvertone...

Cornelia Murr: I can’t do without my Silvertone electric guitar. In part this is because it is my only electric guitar and basically has been for many years but also I’m just attached to it . We’ve been through a lot together and it feels like a living friend to me, like a pet. It has serious character.

Silvertones were made by Sears in the '50s and '60s. They were what parents might have bought their kid for Christmas who had an interest in music. There’s something very accessible and simple and humble about them. I have the solid body kind that came with the incredible “all in one” amplifier built into the case. The amp has the most beautiful tremolo I’ve ever heard. It’s a delicate apparatus and mine is currently in need of repair so it’s not suited to touring, but on the contrary the guitar itself feels like it can withstand just about anything. It’s plywood. It’s sturdy. Yet chic.

I bought my Silvertone from Guitar Center in Hollywood of all places, which actually has a decent used / vintage selection. They told me that it had lived previously in a big time pop producer’s studio where many a Mariah Carey album had been made, which I find kind of hilarious to picture. I had the wonderful Reuben Cox of Old Style Guitars in LA make a few adjustments to mine to make it a bit smoother to play. I’d recommend taking any guitar to him as he has a remarkable ability to improve the feel of an instrument and customize it to you. So, highly recommend a Silvertone and also a visit to Reuben!

Cornelia Murr's Run to the Center album is out Feb 28
